Christmas Paint by Numbers: Plan a Gift You Can Finish

· Seasonal projects · By Painting by Numbers Tool

The wrapping paper is ready; half the dog’s face is still blank. A Christmas paint by numbers gift has two deadlines: getting the materials and finishing the painting. Decide which gift you are giving before you choose a picture: a project to unwrap, or a painting you will complete yourself.

A Christmas paint by numbers gift is not always a finished painting

Our preference: surprise someone with the subject only if you know their taste. A cherished family photo may be meaningful but still be a picture they do not want hanging on their wall. Asking them to choose between two images loses a little surprise and avoids giving them unwanted homework.

If you want a physical project, preview a custom paint by numbers from photo kit. Confirm delivery availability and the current estimate for the destination before paying. This guide does not give a guaranteed Christmas order-by date.

Count free sessions, then decide how much painting fits

Download the one-page painting gift planner. Fill in the handover date, the arrival date you have actually confirmed, and the evenings you can realistically use. Leave separate space for finishing and framing.

Christmas Day falls on Friday, 25 December 2026, as listed in the US Office of Personnel Management’s holiday calendar. Your own deadline may be earlier: a family visit, posting date or trip takes precedence.

Example of available time, not an estimate of how long a painting takes
Sessions per weekLengthAcross four weeks
230 minutes4 painting hours
345 minutes9 painting hours
460 minutes16 painting hours

Those totals exclude delivery, missed evenings, drying and framing. A four-week gap in a calendar can contain surprisingly little brush time. Choose a composition that fits your actual time; do not treat the largest canvas you can afford as the best present.

Use a trial section instead of somebody else’s finishing time

  1. Choose a representative patch with both broad areas and detail. Time the painting you actually do, including colour changes.
  2. Estimate how much comparable area that patch represents. If 30 minutes covers roughly 5%, a simple extrapolation suggests another 9.5 hours for the remaining 95%.
  3. Repeat on a detailed patch. The first estimate can be badly wrong if it covered easy background while the face remains untouched.
  4. Recheck against your available sessions. If the plan no longer fits, simplify the project or give it as an unpainted kit.

This is a rough planning method, not a measured completion-time formula. Area estimates are imperfect, second coats add work, and a painter’s pace changes. Its value is forcing an early decision while you still have alternatives.

Read paint by numbers canvas size before choosing a format, and compare paint by numbers colour count before adding more shades. A close crop can give the important face more room without filling the rest of the canvas with fiddly background.

Do not squeeze drying into the night before wrapping

Dry to the touch is not a universal signal that a painting is ready for every finish. Follow the directions for your own paint and varnish. For example, Liquitex’s varnishing guidance says to let paint dry fully, potentially up to two weeks, and allow at least 24 hours between varnish coats.

That is guidance for those products, not a claim about every paint-by-numbers kit. Do not add varnish merely because you are giving the painting away. If the finish you chose needs time you do not have, change the gift plan instead of rushing the product instructions.

A personal photo still has to survive the pattern

Use a picture the recipient recognises, with clear light on the subject. A group photograph with tiny faces asks much more of the pattern than one close-up. The paint by numbers photo guide helps you compare candidates before committing.

You can check a preview with Painting By Numbers before ordering. If you prefer to print a pattern, printable paint by numbers offers a paid own-photo PDF; paper, paint and any frame are separate. A digital file removes a parcel from that part of the plan, not the time needed to make the picture.

Put a review date in your calendar now, before your last practical ordering or making window. On that date, compare the unfinished areas with the sessions left. An enjoyable project given honestly beats a finished present painted in a panic.
