Paint by Numbers for Beginners: What Nobody Tells You First

The first canvas is the one where you learn everything the box does not tell you. It usually still turns out fine. But there are four or five things that decide whether you spend an evening enjoying it or an evening fixing it, and none of them are difficult once you know them.

What it actually is

A paint by numbers kit is a canvas printed with outlined areas, each with a small number, and a set of numbered paint pots. You match number to number. That is the whole system. What makes one kit good and another frustrating is not the concept — it is the size of the areas, the quality of the print, and whether the paint covers the printed lines.

Start with a canvas that is bigger than you think

This is the mistake almost everyone makes. A small canvas is not easier, it is harder: the same number of areas has to fit in less space, so every area shrinks. On a 20x30 cm canvas the smallest areas end up around 2 mm across, and a normal brush cannot land inside them.

For a first painting, 40x50 cm is the sweet spot. The areas are comfortable, it still fits on a table, and it looks like something when it is finished. If the subject is a face, go bigger rather than smaller — faces need small areas for the eyes and mouth no matter what size you pick.

Fewer colours is easier, and often looks better

More colours sounds like more detail. In practice it means more areas, smaller areas, and more pot-swapping. A 24-colour painting has a bold, graphic look and takes noticeably less time. A 48-colour painting has smoother shading but asks for patience and a steady hand.

The four things that go wrong

1. The paint is too thick or too dry

Acrylic in small pots dries out at the top. Stir each pot before you start — properly, down to the bottom. If it is still like yoghurt, add one drop of water and stir again. One drop. Two makes it transparent and then the printed number shows through, which is the next problem.

2. The numbers show through the paint

Usually this means the coat is too thin, not that the paint is bad. Let the first coat dry completely and go over it a second time. Two thin coats cover better than one thick one and do not leave ridges. On very light colours over dark print, a third pass is normal.

3. Painting yourself into a corner

If you work left to right across the canvas with your hand resting on it, you will smudge what you just did. Work from the top down and, if you are right-handed, from left to right — and keep a sheet of paper under your hand. More on this in what order to paint in.

4. Brushes drying out mid-session

Acrylic dries in the brush in minutes and then the tip is gone for good. Keep a jar of water within reach and park the brush in it every time you swap colours. Not resting on the bottom — that bends the tip. A clip or the rim of the jar is enough.

How long it takes

A 40x50 cm canvas with 24 colours takes most people somewhere between eight and fifteen hours, spread over several evenings. That is not a fast hobby and it is not supposed to be. If you want to finish something in one sitting, print a small pattern on A4 instead — see printable paint by numbers.

What you need beyond the box

• A jar of water and a cloth. Non-negotiable, for the brushes.
• Good light, from the side. Overhead light casts your own hand's shadow exactly where you are painting.
• A toothpick or a fine brush for the areas the included brushes cannot reach. The kit brushes cover most of it, but not the smallest eyes.
• Patience with the first hour. The canvas looks like a mess until roughly a third of it is filled. That is normal and it does resolve.
